DeLuca to Resign

by Genghis Conn · November 13th, 2007, 12:55 pm · 22 Comments

The Courant is reporting that Sen. Lou DeLuca will resign.

According to the Courant, an announcement will be made this afternoon.

…Whatever was on those tapes must have been very bad, indeed.

Update: DeLuca’s resignation is effective November 30th.

Another Update Mark Pazniokas posts Sen. Williams’s response to criticism of the Senate’s slow, slow handling of the matter:

Williams attributed DeLuca’s resignation to the Senate being ready to grant subpoena power to the Bipartisan Committee of Review, the panel formed to recommend if DeLuca should face punishment ranging from reprimand to expulsion.

“As a result, Sen. DeLuca resigned,” Williams said.

Shorter Williams: The system worked.

What system? You just hung around and stalled, hoping he’d go away! And he did, so I guess it did work after all. …Unbelievable. Just… wow.

…I’m really fed up with our government right now. ..And it takes a lot for me to say that.

About time. The inquiry dragged on much too long.

I still hope that Lou puts the finger on all the other dirty Senators, especially “Billy the Bagman” in Larson’s back office.

If Lou does not perform this act, then it’s time to follow the money, again.

Well, a big congrats to the Bipartisan Committee of Review, who managed to drag this out so long that they didn’t have to make any sort of decision after all. I’m sure they’re breathing a sigh of relief.

I bet Cappiello is happy that the tape will not be heard. How much do you think he had to beg Lou to go or did he buy him bottles of wine too?

Any word on potential candidates? I see Sean Williams in all the pictures on Courant.com.

  • 6 NECT // Nov 13, 2007 at 2:15 pm ·

How about neither.. Not only did Cappiello have nothing to do in those tapes or this whole situation, it was Lou who was going to make sure no one ever heard those tapes. He wasn’t so quick to give up his seat until the last second, only he had more to hide with all of this. Keep wasting time thinking otherwise though.

Sean is the logical candidate for the R’s. I am not sure who the D’s would put up.

What about State Representative Arthur O’Neill of Southbury?

I hear his name might be in the mix for DeLuca’s Senate Seat.

Sandy appears on a DeLuca thread taking un-substantiated shots at Cappiello. In other news, the sun rose in the east today. Please just go away, ma’am, unless you actually can contribute something to the discussion.

My view on the whole DeLuca situation – - – it’s about time.

    Chris…

Sandy has trouble accepting that Chris Murphy also took money from James Galante….

Looks like the only past Dem challengers in the last ten years were Patty Rielly and Ken Curran. I’d love to see Curran take a shot.

    >>Looks like the only past Dem challengers

The seat hasn’t been held by a Democrat since I think 1913.

Legislators on both sides of the aisle were too gutless to call for DeLuca to resign so they formed a committee with no teeth and hoped it would exert enough pressure and take enough time to eventually force DeLuca out, all while wasting taxpayer dollars. Disgraceful on all fronts.
Plus, we never established any precedent for what the standard is for a state legislator to get expelled. Clearly, failure to report a bribe isn’t a strong enough crime, as Rep. Clemons is still in office. Jail time for DWI doesn’t do it – see Ryan, Rep. Kevin. Even DeLuca’s crime that he actually plead guilty to – conspiracy to threaten – isn’t enough as the Committee wouldn’t vote him out based only on his guilty plea. I guess we need actual footage of a legislator accepting money in exchange for a vote and exclaiming into the camer “Yes. I am taking a bribe!” Oh, and make sure it’s in High Definition and Dolby Digital or else some legislative committee will claim it’s too blury and therefore does not provide enough evidence for expulsion.

Highest average IQ of any senate district in the whole state.

Looks like Genghis Conn hates process.

Due process is there for everyone not just some. To expel a kid from school there is a process that must be followed.

…I’m really fed up with our government right now. ..And it takes a lot for me to say that.

No, it doesn’t. You praise inaction from those you favor, and condemn it in those you oppose. That’s why you’re bitching at Don Williams when Jodi Rell could have burned DeLuca out of the Senate with 15 minutes or less of concerted effort on her part.

And, if the Senate Dems had just expelled him as soon as his guilty plea came down, you’d have torn them apart for “abusing their power” or some such. Save your faux hand-wringing shtick for an audience that hasn’t seen it — and seen through it — dozens of times already.

..or, more probably, would have brought more embarrasment to Lou’s grand daughter.

Between her idiot husband and her Grandfather that poor woman can’t catch a break. I feel so bad for her and her kids. This whole situation had to have been terrible for them.

Baloney, and you know it. He pled out on threatening, but DeLuca sold out our government to criminals. He and you should both be ashamed of the BS you’re spreading.

    >>Between her idiot husband

I know people that avoid doing business not only with him, but with the dealer who’s license he operates under (hello? DMV? Anyone paying any attention to this stuff? Somebody want to go do a dealer plate check and see what’s going on?)

Someone please correct me if I have this wrong, but the tape has nothing to do with his family right? He talked to Galante directly about the threatening. The tape is a conversation between DeLuca and an undercover FBI agent offering money for favors, where DeLuca declines the money because it would be too easy to get caught, but promises to do anything he can to help out Galante.

How would that be embarrassing to his family (any more than it would be embarrassing to anyone’s family if their family member came up a little unclean on an FBI tape)?
