House Republicans are proposing a pilot project in which their employees may choose to work one day per week from home. This would save on gas and other costs. Here is Minority Leader Larry Cafero talking about the plan:
However, the plan needs Democrats to sign off on it, and they don’t think much of it:
“We always knew the Republicans were phoning it in, now they want to make it official policy,” Derek Slap, spokesman for Senate President Donald Williams, said Tuesday.

“It’s a concept worth looking at, but it is critical that no government service is compromised,” added Larry Perosino, spokesman for Speaker of the House James Amann. “Constituent service is paramount at the Legislature, and that may not be an efficient way to meet our responsibility.
“Sounds like there isn’t much going on in the minority offices these days,” he added.
The governor isn’t sold on the idea, either.
[Rell spokesman Rich Harris] said a majority of state employees give direct services to the public and are needed in their offices or in the field five days a week. “Unlike the federal government, the state has few back office jobs,” Harris said. (Stuart)
It seems like a good idea if it wouldn’t take away services from the public, and I’m sure that there are at least some state employees who could work from home, say, one day per week.
Several towns feeling the pinch have already cut back to a four-day work week for their staff, and I’m sure more are to come.
