The state surplus has grown to $82 million, according to the Office of Fiscal Analysis, and both Gov. Rell and Senate President Donald Williams want the money to go to heating assistance:
In a press release sent out Wednesday morning Senate President Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, said, “any surplus in excess of the $22 million should be set aside in an emergency account that will be dedicated to helping families make ends meet this winter.” (Stuart)
Gov. Rell said essentially the same thing in a press release yesterday. The extra money comes from a late increase in income tax revenue. A special session to spend the money, presumably on heating assistance, will take place on August 22nd.
