“Our position is we know we are going to have to raise some revenues to balance the budget. The question really is what balance of taxes and spending cuts will the legislature and the governor be able to agree on in a couple of months.”

Rep. Cameron Staples, (D-New Haven), co-chair of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee. The committee is considering bills that would raise taxes, something the governor has said she is firmly against.

    Dear Governor–

Last cycle you were ready to raise the income tax by an across-the-board 10%.

This cycle you want to raise State fees like crazy, but disingenuously say those aren’t “taxes”.

    Two questions:
    1) Where’s the leadership?
    2) Are you being honest with us?

Personally, I don’t think that you really believe we can balance the budget without tax increases.

Instead I think you’re playing politics, (and lying), at a time when Connecticut really needs you to be leading the way.

Please re-think your priorities. Your re-election campaign should not come before the needs of Connecticut.

    raising
permits and fees” are taxes by another name….its clear to me at least that there will have to be a mix of things done to get the deficit under control.
