According to Ted Mann in then New London DAY today, April 19, 2009, there is a real move to eliminate expensive mandates on Connecticut Municipalities from the State.

Of course, then the article discusses some of the state mandates and the fact that there is disagreement regarding whether a mandate should be eliminated or not or whether the State should pick up the cost for a particular mandate.
”To be honest, (some demands) were relatively small items that, when we actually had public hearings on these bills, we realized these were not necessarily big-dollar, big-ticket items,” said Rep. Brendan Sharkey, D-Hamden, the chairman of the Planning and Development Committee. “In many cases, they were just things that towns objected to having to do, which made sense, but they weren’t necessarily going to provide cost savings.”
So, will there be savings for the towns and cities or not? Hopefully, there will be agreement on eliminating some of the unfunded mandates when the budget is finally settled in June (or July or August or whenever).

Did Gov. Rell attend the first budget negotiation meeting on Monday, my guess she’ll sign a budget with wholesale tax increases if Lisa tells her to.
