Simmons Raises $970k for Senate Bid

by Heath · October 13th, 2009, 11:26 am · 6 Comments

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons has raised $970k in the third quarter, according to The Hill.

Simmons’s $970,000 take is an improvement over his second-quarter haul of $750,000, and hovering around the $1 million-per-quarter mark is about where a top Senate challenger should be in the off-year, depending on the state.

Simmons has $1.1 million cash on hand.

State Sen. Sam Caligiuri and former WWE CEO Linda McMahon have yet to release their 3Q numbers. Ambassador Tom Foley already announced that he’d raised $280k and added $500k of his own money to his campaign

That would be a really good quarter for him if he wasn’t facing this crazy 5- way cagematch smackdown primary with three self-funders before the general.

Sara, please don’t be so dismissive based on your hope for a “crazy 5-way cagematch smackdown” — that might never materialize.

FWIW, Simmons, Caligiuri and Foley seem to have entered into some kind of a pact in terms of not attacking each other and going after McMahon. (Schiff is never going to be a factor in this thing.)

My point is that it hasn’t escaped this Democrat’s notice that Simmons lives in CT-02, Foley in CT-04, and Caligiuri in CT-05. What if the GOP settles this thing at convention, and we end up seeing a GOP dream ticket with one candidate for Senate, and two candidates for Congress?

Personally I hope that greed and ego rule the day. (Thank you Ms. McMahon!) But I also think we need to keep an eye on potential downsides, and avoid any polyanna-type thinking.

This is off topic, but somebody held up a Schiff 2010 sign during WWE last night. http://i35.tinypic.com/nedqah.gif

The Schiffsters have the Howard Stern guerilla marketing thing going on but little else.

One thing we know for sure: Simmons will be on the ballot.
