State Rep. Jason Bartlett has been arrested for driving on a suspended license:
Newtown Police Sgt. Dominic Costello says Bartlett was pulled over by an officer who saw him driving while speaking on his cell phone, without a hands free device. After a short investigation, the officer determined that his registration had expired and his license was suspended.
No word on the severity of the charges, but it seems relatively minor. Sounds like a great Christmas gift for Rep. Bartlett would be a hands-free device for his cell phone.

…and driving with a suspended license. Ironic considering he apparently voted to raise DMV fees….
I wonder why his license was suspended? He wants CT residents to pay more In DMV fees while he pays nothing?
I thought the cell phone law could not be the sole basis for a stop – if so, it sure sounds like racial profiling.
Don’t these guys drive around with special license plates with their district numbers affixed? Kind of makes them a target, no?
Targeted because of his marker plate? Racial profiling? Give me a break. I can’t wait to hear Bartlett’s excuse. Maybe he mailed the paperwork but O’Rourke’s dive bar ladyfriend from the dmv croaked before she could process it…
Good thing he sponsored An Act Implementing A Statewide Support Program for Bicycling (HB 6219)…..he better channeling his best Lance Armstrong, ’cause if he’s biking from Bethel to Hartford in the winter, his face will be freezing, but ‘dem leggies will be burnin’.
Pure arrogance. For many in the legislature, the laws they enact are for us stupid plebes to obey. However, they need not pay heed- they are super-duper special! What other laws are optional to Bartlett?
Judging from that side shot of Bartlett in his perp pic, he wouldn’t be able to manage biking very far as Clak suggests. But this could be a chance to work off some of those late-night legislative whoopie pies.
So why was his license suspended in the first place? Now there are reports that he had no car insurance either. Complete tool.
no car insurance, u kidding me! His democratic congressional delegation just voted to make not having health insurance a crime punishable by large fines and prison time but not having car insurance is ok for him.
what a bunch of crap. you guys are jumpin allover Jason but no one’s saying anything about stewie mckiney droppin off his ghetto chick.
lets look at some facts. bartlett isnt just a run of the mill legislator. he achioved national fame last year bravely coming out as a gay black democrat in the legislature in favor of gay marriage. he has been a target ever since. you can bet that this is a coordinated right wing repubican conspiracy to get him.
Badonkadonk: Bartlett is a public figure….Stewart McKinney, Jr. is not. And I don’t know what sort of “national fame” you are talking about—does the News Times deliver in Orange County now?
this is what im talkin about

jut a year ago bartlett became more than just a state representative, he became a national figure in the gay rights movement. he is one of the most significant and important national figures in the movement now and thats gonna attract haters on him.
uh-oh liberals are pulling both the racial AND conspiracy cards after we complain about a guy who writes regulations to make sure we dont do what he apparently does.
I was pulled over for being on a cell phone a few months ago and Im a young white guy, this isn’t racial profiling you hack.
Conspiracy? Was the cop in on it? Did he come straight from a 9/11 truth rally or a freemason convention?
If anything I would say he shouldn’t have been pulled over but according to his party, he should be reamed for not having car insurance. This is what happens when you over regulate every aspect of life.
How do you think that phone call with $165k/yr, House Dem spinmeister Doug Whiting went?
Bartlett: Hey Doug, I…uhh…got arrested last night and was hoping you could help me with the media.
Whiting: Jason, if you left a shoeless, drunk lady..err..guy, to freeze to death last night maybe you should call Jim for advice.
Bartlett: Oh no no. Nothing like that.
Whiting: I thought the back taxes were old news?
Bartlett: Yeah it is. I was talking on my cell phone while driving.
Whiting: Ohhhhh well that we can work with.
Bartlett: Well it was my second offense…
Whiting: Jason- that’s what the taxpayers pay me for! This is cake.
Bartlett: …and I was driving without in a car without registration…
Whiting: Jason- I’ll put a plan together first thing in the morning we can spin this.
Bartlett: …and I don’t think I have insurance…oh yeah, and my license is suspended.
Whiting: Jay…I don’t get paid THAT much. Sorry I uhh…I gotta run
“lets look at some facts. bartlett isnt just a run of the mill legislator. he achieved national fame last year bravely coming out as a gay black democrat in the legislature in favor of gay marriage. he has been a target ever since. you can bet that this is a coordinated right wing repubican conspiracy to get him.”
I’ve got to be completely honest – I had to Google his name because at first I thought you were all talking about a character from the West Wing.
That said, speaking as someone who recently dropped about $500 at the DMV due to moving back home to Connecticut, I’d appreciate it if state legislators were in compliance with the regulations / fees they’re responsible for enacting.
Republican State Senator Tom Herlihy was arrested last night for drunk driving, according to the Hartford Courant.
Herlihy retired from the senate last year, and was elected to the Simsbury Board of Selectmen earlier this month.
How do you think the phone call with Chris Healy went:
Herlihy: Hey Chris, I uhh.. …got arrested last night and was hoping you could help me with the media.
Healy: Oh really for what?
Herlihy: Drunk driving.
Healy: Perfect, I know plenty about that!
Herlihy: I knew you’d be the guy to go to.
You’re right…seems like a logical person for FORMER State Senator Tom Herlihy to call.
I mean, I wouldn’t expect him to call sitting Democrat State Reps. Kevin Ryan, or Brian O’Connor, or Patricia Dillon….
Seeing as he is a CURRENT elected official on Simsbury’s Board of Selectmen, I don’t see why that wouldn’t be a logical person to call.
Or maybe he would call sitting Republican State Rep. Livvy Floren…
Sorry, Tank, but being stupid is bipartisan and we have idiots on both side of the aisle.
Gear- I agree 100%. Heck I even agreed in my last post that Healy would be the logical call. Also, I realize Herlihy is a councilman but I used caps to correct the error in your post, he isn’t a state senator.
Either way, both he and Bartlett have some ’splainin to do.
Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele to announce his candidacy for Governor tomorrow (Thursday)…..
This guy can’t even manage his glove compartment, and we’re trusting him to help lead the state? Predictably, a lame excuse this evening from Jason Fartlett: I must’ve missed the suspension notice in the mail. Bartlett tells the News Times, “If I had knowledge it had happened, I would have taken care of it.” But didn’t he know that he got the original ticket? What did he think non-payment would lead to? Not even a whiff of an apology, either. In fact, he tells us that the arrest came at an especially bad time for him. Smug.
Is Donkeydonk on crack? The dude was on a cell phone…the cop pulled him over (just cause, why have a law you don’t enforce)…they ran his license, it came up suspended, arrest. Are you saying he should have received special treatment because he was black? Gay? A legislator? Are we really arguing this? I’ve never even heard of the guy. He made a mistake and will have to pay a fine and answer to his constituents in November, let them be teh judge. Racial profiling? Conspiracies? Come on.
wish you guys/girls coulda made it tonight… there were quite a few celebrities in attendance:

And as I said… thank you Mrs. GC for having tolerated all those hours of wonderful map creation!!! And for you cartograms fans out there, Bob claimed dibs on GCs return to CT cartography.
Hey, if Sarah Palin qualifies as a GOP potential President-in-waiting, why not Glenn Beck?
PS — It’s about the Constitution, stupid!
Thanks again everyone for making the gathering a success. I had a great time. Here’s my report from the event:
Connecticut Bob
or just the link if that doesn’t work:
http://ctbob.blogspot.com/2009/11/more-on-gathering.html
it was deinately a conspiracy. man are you guys really that blind? why is the media even making anything out of this? when you lynch a guy for doin nothing but talk on his cell phone and make up this crap about him its definately bigotry, racism and an attack on civil rights.
i hope bartlett sues.
Wow, DonkeyTurds, I have to admit, you make a compelling argument … for Dumbest Post of 2009.
Donkey, you are an ass.
Donkey
You are either joking or should be institutionalized. “Doin” nothing but “talk” on his cell phone – That’s illegal and something I (I’m white and straight) have been fined 100 dollars for breaking. Aside from that nothing else is being “make up”. He has no license, he has no insurance and he failed to pay for the first ticket. These are facts. It’s comical how you can defend this situation and make it racial, then again based on the punctuation and grammatical structure of you don’t spend your working days splitting the atom.
‘National Fame’ is all the more reason Jason shoudl be careful.
Look at the facts.
His license has been suspended FOR A YEAR!
He is a repeat violator for using a cell phone when driving.
His license was repealed because he broke the law then didn’t pay the fine.
My guess is, he would have probably been let go…. IF
He wasn’t driving a car that had NO insurance
He wasn’t driving a car that had an EXPIRED registration.
I hope his license gets suspended again when he goes to court.
