Labriola to Run for Congress in the Third

by Heath · November 30th, 2009, 5:33 pm · 5 Comments

Wallingford Republican Jerry Labriola, Jr. announced today that he will seek the GOP nomination to run against Rosa DeLauro in the Third Congressional District.

“I am a fiscal conservative and my opponent is a spend-thrift liberal Washington insider,” Labriola noted. “We’re $12 trillion in debt. The voters will decide.”

Labriola, an attorney who practices in Naugatuck with his brother, State Rep. David Labriola, hails from a political family.  In addition to his brother’s service in the State House, his father Gerald was a State Senator and ran for the U.S. Senate against Sen. Joe Lieberman in 1994.

Rep. DeLauro has faced several weak challenges since winning her seat in the epic 1990 open seat race against then-State Sen. Tom Scott.  DeLauro is well-noted in the New Haven-based district for her robust constituent service operation and has remained popular during her tenure in Congress.

Though the Third hasn’t been a bright spot for the GOP in years, the last few days have seen a flurry of activity as reported here yesterday when it was revealed that Peggy Rogers of Milford would seek the Republican nomination.

Labriola’s announcement increases the Republican field to at least three, as 2008 candidate, former State Central Committee Member, and regular CTLPer Boaz ItsHaky continues his bid for the seat.

His father may have been a good candidate for Governor. His brother may be a good state rep. Why would anyone vote for Jerry? Maybe he should sets his sights a little lower (ie., more attainable) so as to aspire to represent the 3rd. Just because it is anticipated that there be an Anti-Obama backlash next November is no reason to select a candidate with no qualifications and no real name recognition (in the 3rd).

Wolcottboy, Elizabeth Esty is no longer a Cheshire Town Council[wo]man. She’s the State Representative from the 103rd district.

    Wilbur Cross,

Thanks, I stand corrected. I should update my planner!
