Republican Tom Foley of Greenwich announced today that he will be running for Governor instead of the U.S. Senate.
In an e-mail to supporters sent simultaneously with the announcement, the Greenwich businessman promised a “Plan Forward for Connecticut” in the near future:
So I am announcing today that I will be running for Governor of this great State. In the weeks ahead I will be assembling a team to evaluate options for solving the fiscal and other problems we face. We will prepare a Plan Forward for Connecticut which I will share with you when it is complete.
Mr. Foley’s skill set – executive management, problem solving, and turning around failing businesses – always seemed like an odd fit for the House of Lords. In the race for Chief Executive of Connecticut, it is likely that Foley will be in his element.
The next critical test of his renewed candidacy will be to offer, as he calls it, the “Plan Forward for Connecticut”. The problems that Connecticut faces are substantially different from the federal issues. How the former Ambassador fares in the public eye after the switch will likely be determined by how well he handles the new issue set.
While Mr. Foley brushed off questions about how he’ll finance his candidacy for Governor, the overhauled campaign website tells the tale. He’ll be accepting contributions up to $3,500, a clear indication that public financing and its expenditure caps aren’t going to hold back the Foley campaign.
Lt. Governor Mike Fedele announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination yesterday, and several more entrants – such as House GOP Leader Larry Cafero or Senate GOP Leader John McKinney – are possible.

Does anyone know what will happen to the money in Foley’s Senate account, and if he’ll have access to any of it for the Gov. run? (My apologies if this question has been asked in another thread.)
Linda McMahon when will you’re a joke? http://bit.ly/7WRnHQ
Skill set? What skill set? See my post here for a discussion of his last administrative fiasco:

Thanks, realnixon!
Also, all your base are belong!
Foley’s announcement was a complete disaster, by any measure. He told the media, “this isn’t a news conference.” AUFK me? Did you not INVITE the media to show up? Talk about amateur hour.
Foley refused to answer any policy questions. He said he’ll get back to the press after studying the issues and write position papers.
Not what you want in a Gov. candidate. Maybe he went to go ask Scott Frantz what the state issues are? Maybe not, his friend Scott is endorsing Fedele he even lead the pledge at Fedele’s announcment.
Here’s hoping Foley announces he’s out of the race tommorrow. 2 WORDS: Rank amateur!
The coverage today seems really slanted. I’m not exactly a Foley supporter, however I have to ask; do other candidates usually take questions immediately following their campaign announcement? I’m pretty sure the answer is no. Candidates don’t usually follow up an announcement like this with a freewheeling press conference.
I don’t understand why the coverage has focused on his refusal to answer questions with no mention of what he said in his speech. Campaign announcements are usually just fluff and political theater. I for one wasn’t expecting a major policy speech today.
Who the heck has a full plan on day 1. Fedele has had 4 years to come up with a plan and put out nothing of substance at his announcement. Totally slanted coverage.
Rogersugrue,
I couldn’t agree more. Why does Fedele just get all of these cream puff pieces about him being “the embodiment of the American dream” while his announcement lacked any substance whatsover… The guy hijacked a CBIA meeting to use as a as a political prop (even though they supposedly don’t endorse candidates) and then held a rally. Was there some intense Q & A he had with the press that I somehow missed… is that why he’s not getting skewered like Foley?
This guy’s annoyed me since he decided to declare “I will be the Republican candidate”… as if there wasn’t going to even be a primary. Then he assumes Jodi is going to endorse him, and blabs about a private conversation they supposedly had about her supporting him (my guess is she meant she would support him as a friend, or in the general election). It’s very nice that he owned a business and has been the official state wallflower for the last four years, but why aren’t we demanding substance from the one guy who’s actually been in there with the current bosses? What the heck are this guys’ major legislative and policy accomplishments other than getting elected and being appointed to things!?
I think I remember this guy from this ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ydplrvbm6vA
