Working Families Party Runs Slate for Hartford City Council

Hartford’s nine-member City Council always has six Democrats. That’s because, under the city’s charter, three seats on the Council must be set aside for “minority representation,” which usually means that they are won by an anemic Republican Party. This year, the Working Families Party would like to take their place, and are running a slate of three candidates, according to a release from the party.

Today, the already crowded Hartford municipal elections got more interesting, as the Working Families Party announced its endorsement for a slate of three candidates who will compete for seats on the Common Council. Candidates and volunteers are currently gathering nominating petition signatures which must be filed with the Secretary of State by August 8th.

The Working Families Party candidates are Luis Cotto, co-owner of the popular La Paloma Sabanera coffeehouse and bookstore on Capitol Avenue; Urania Petit, a community activist and recent graduate from the UCONN School of Social Work; and Dr. Larry Deutsch, a pediatrician, PTO leader, and healthcare advocate.

WFP already has a presence on the Board of Education: in 2005 Sharon Patterson Stallings of the Working Families Party defeated Republican Town Chair Michael Lupo to take a seat there. I’m thinking their chances of replacing the Republican Party as Hartford’s main opposition are pretty good.

Two of these people won two minority seats on the Windham Board of Selectman two terms ago.

One of them was really scary. He thinks terrorist Ernesto “Che” Guevara was a hero.

We only had one Republican out of 11 seats and he switched to the Democrats (where he should have been all along). For a while we had zero. Last time we won them back and the so called “Working Party” have not resurfaced.

Hartford Republicans should take these socialists very seriously. If they work on their base they should win. Democrats can’t vote twice! The Republicans will lose them only if they are lazy.

In fact the Republicans could work to this to their advantage. The Democrats’ base will be spread thin. The Republicans could pick up a seat or two if they work hard on their base.

I think the “Red Menace” approach offers an excellent electoral strategy for the Republicans. Go for it.
