It’s Official: IAFF to Endorse Dodd

by CGG · August 28th, 2007, 5:06 pm · 47 Comments

This is a real coup for the Dodd campaign. Previously it seemed like the IAFF’s 2008 focus would beon keeping Giuliani from becoming the Republican nominee, rather than getting anyone elected. The IAFF’s 2004 endorsement of Kerry is often cited as a turning point for his primary campaign. Dodd’s chances of taking that unspoken “4th spot” just got much better.

Added (by Gabe): The benefit of this endorsement isn’t so much the number of firefighters in America (or in Iowa), but their skill in working the Iowa caucus (ask John Kerry) – a laughably complex way to choose the frontrunner for presidential nominations (everyone in a precinct gets together and, in front of their neighbors, friends, bosses, and co-workers, sits with a group of supporters for a candidate; if the group isn’t 15% of the total, they have to disperse and find a new candidate). Needless to say, organization and opinion leaders become extremely important.

Secondarily, the first major endorsement of the season should give Dodd a pop. Unfortunately for Dodd, as jsrgnt, I think correctly, notes below, Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) is having the mother of all political scandals (live boy version, not dead girl version). It remains to be seen if the Dodd-IAFF endorsement can break through the cacophony and get a little media play. Either way though, the organizational help in Iowa should be a big boost to his campaign.

For some odd reason, Richardson is in that “fourth spot”. This endorsement could help Dodd but I don’t know about being number four.

Presidential campaigns are so frustrating. Larry Craig’s libido is Chris Dodd’s worst enemy right now.

That’s the truth. This story is suddenly huge, and everywhere. Poor Dodd.

Have to wonder how this will help Dodd in Iowa. It’s more boots on the ground for him, and might be good for fourth behind (sigh) Edwards, Clinton and Obama. If he’s lucky.

Not the first time either… the night he first scheduled for O’Reilly, the Minnesota bridge collapse pre-empted him. But it seems the Dodd campaign hopes this endorsement story will stretch out over the next few days:

Most firefighters don’t care what their UNIONs do politically. Many of them don’t agree with it.

An endorsement from a Union does not equal an endorsement from its membership.

  • 15 jsrgnt // Aug 28, 2007 at 8:35 pm ·

An endorsement from Paul Simon doesn’t equal an endorsement from Art Garfunkel, but it doesn’t hurt.

Am I wrong for wanting Obama, Edwards, and Clinton to hold a scream-off on caucus night? At least Edwards has Joe Trippi on board. He might be training him to byaaah his neatly combed heart out.

“This is a real coup for the Dodd campaign. ”

Q: What world does this phrase/post come from???

A: A weird, overly paritisan one.

There are no ‘coups’ for this pathetic campaign. Merely footnotes in a candidacy that, itself, will only be the most miniscule of footnotes in the ‘08 race.

  • 17 jsrgnt // Aug 28, 2007 at 8:42 pm ·

Wait and see. Dodd may not win himself a lot of attention, but he’s put together a great organization built to win elections. Is it going to work? Maybe. We can call it “too early” until Christmas. The IAFF is great at organizing, and this is worth a few points at a minimum.

Additionally, Headless Horseman in comment #11 italicized our lives.

  • 18 El Kabong // Aug 28, 2007 at 8:52 pm ·
Wait and see.
No need to wait. Any effort put into Dodd’s race is just as much wasted energy as the wasted ink newspapers are spending in writing about it.

Oh wait….mainstream media is largely–and deservingly, ignoring it. Paying attention? Political junkies. Rapt attention? Those who think it could have some impact on the overall race.

If you folks who like to follow Dodd’s campaign need equally facinating stories to follow, I think some religious figure just appeared in the grass clippings of my lawn.

    Not so anyone would notice.

I think most most pro-labor people are Dems; but judging from the number of non-union cars I see with Democrat bumper stickers; most Dems don’t give two hoots about organized labor much-less American jobs.

The International Association of Fire Fighters, headquartered in Washington, DC, represents more than 281,000 full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics who protect 85 percent of the nation’s population. More than 3,100 affiliates and their members protect communities in every state in the United States and in Canada.

Silly on the other hand is this crazy rightwing summer of weirdness consisting of family values conservatives awarding gay porn stars freedom awards (Matt Sanchez) or those same conservative family values types trying to get their hands all over annonymous dudes in dirty bathroom stalls (Larry Craig) or those same conservative family values types getting underage boys to hang out and cyber (Mark Foley) or those family values conservatives yelling at America how the family system is broken because of Democrats (unmarried and childless Ann Coulter and thrice married and childless drug addicted Rush Limbaugh). You guys on the right have some cleaning to do in that glass house.

No, nothing at all wrong with niether, but plenty wrong with opposing legislation granting equal rights and protection under the law to homosexuals while being so shame filled you can’t admit to being one yourself (I’m talking about Craig and Foley, not you since you cannot cast a vote and apparently unlike those mentioned do not hide and look down on others for being that way). And yes also something is definitely wrong with having/being either A.) multiple divorces or b.) being never married and c.) also being childless while ranting about the state of the American family as if it’s the fault of Democrats or as if your advice or counsel on thematter means crap. I’m also not going to listen to Michael Vick give me dog care advice. If you fit that bill, then break out the windex.

It bring this up only b/c I find it odd that so many on the right side of the aisle find humor in Dodd running for President while at the same time being members of the Republican Party during their Endles Shame-filled Hypocritical and Often times Illegal Sexual Fantasy Summer. When what Deluca did looks like small beans compared to your congressional counterparts, I think yes, your party is the one with the problem.

Anyway, these endorsements are quaint. I just think the suggestion that news of Larry Craig’s bathroom exploits is overshadowing the otherwise enormous news of Dodd getting this endorsement is ludicrous.

This news could be eclipsed by juggling animals, or reports of Paris Hilton farting. Because it’s not really news.

Plus, I’d love someone to poll those 281,000 firefighters and paramedics that IAFF represents and see who they want for president.

Do you delude yourself into thinking they will say” Chris Dodd!”??

There wouldn’t have been so many posts if Republicans didn’t have such an illegal and pervy summer.

As Miss Teen South Carolina showed us,…….almost any story can eclipse Dodd’s endorsement with regards to the conscious of the general population. 1 out 5 can’t locate the US on a map and the youth we have trying to explain the reasons why can’t even put a sentence together. She came in third by the way. Someone cue the Lee Greenwood music.

ACR, you said in post # 28:

“What about the MILLIONS of Dems wringing their hands in concern over “the plight” of American workers while driving non-union Japanese nameplate vehicles????”

While your at it you can add everything else from DVD players, Computers, Cell phones, to your Nike running shoes. I suspect the “plight of American workers” is the last thing on anyone’s mind. Democrat, Republican, we can’t wait to drop down our hard earned money every day at the closest Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, or Kmart.

We just are finishing the latest back to school season…..Want to bet that 95% of anything that was purchased for the kids headed back to school, was made by non union hands, over seas?

The problem is we are faced with the awful choice to either send jobs out of CT and the country to lower our manufacturing costs, to be competitive. Or we can keep those jobs here and go out of business, because we are not competitive. Both decisions cost jobs.

So when people like, for real, say:

“I’m strapped for cash and if a Hyundai is cheaper I have to go with it, but I’ll still support the policies that help those making the Union cars. …”

I often wonder just what would those policies actually be?? If someone opened a store next to a Best Buy, that carried the same products one finds at Best Buy but were more expensive because that story only carried products made in America, by unionized workers, how long do you think that store would survive?

Or, keeping it all American, would you ( would anyone) pay $50 more to fly Delta, rather than United ( both unionized) to get from point A to B if the flights were roughly the same? It’s all about price …….

Anyone claiming concern for the “plight of the American worker” needs to understand that policies that will help solve their plight have to somehow include leveling the playing field. White Collar, Blue Collar, Democrat, or Republican, we need to learn to be content to, buy less for more, rather than always wanting to, buy more for less……..

In other words, we will have to put our money where our mouth is for the priviliege of concerning ourselves about the plight of the American worker.

    >>“I’m strapped for cash

    Then buy a used domestic.

My $2500 (that’s not a typo) 10 year old Ford has 208K having cost me another 1000 in the past 27 months in repairs and maybe another 1000 in regular maint. (monthly oil changes; tires; 3 brake jobs, a battery, etc. – I put on a LOT of miles.) Thus aside from gas and insurance (my taxes are 65 per year) the vehicle’s cost me *maybe* 5000 (including original purchase) in the past 27 months and aprox 90K miles. No new car could rival that.

New cars (and I put over 100o of them over the curb) are primarily for idiots or those with money to burn. The only worse investments are gambling or swamp property in the south.

We should *not* be as concerned with “buy-American” as much we should pay attention to just what you’re supporting with your money.

Japan blocks our trade every chance they get; allowing us for example to export to them only 2 million pairs of shoes a year. (not that our shoe industry is doing so well – but then again they have no real leather industry to protect anyway so what’s the point?)

Fly into China in a Boeing; hop into a Buick taxi, notice the Starbucks, KFC, and McDonald’s as you ride to the Hilton. You WON’T be having quite that experience in Tokyo. China doesn’t block our trade – Japan does.

Hyundai’s are Korean by the way.

I purchased a new small TV for my in-laws summer place on the Cape; I looked at TV’s from Japan, China, and wound up buying one made in Thailand. The only one that I would not buy was the Japanese TV.

As a Republican I am concerned with the overall health of the nation as a whole – but I do consider most labor unions (as opposed to trade unions) to be a problem and the primary reason we’re losing our manufacturing base.

Most Democrats do not agree – it is therefore more incumbent upon them to put their money where their mouth is as it regards major (cars are 65% labor (ie: W-2) income) purchases. Anything less is pure hypocrisy.
