There’s an interesting article in the Courant this morning about the increasing role Hispanics play in Hartford politics, and on the political division between blacks and Hispanics.
Gov. Rell is asking Sen. Lieberman to introduce legislation that would make the state and the Navy partners in making improvements at Groton. The idea is to make it harder for the Navy to leave.
How did data about Connecticut taxpayers end up on a tape in Ohio… which was stolen from a state employee’s car? Geez!
What else is going on?

The CCSU newspaper is again in the news. This time, a cartoon in the paper had something about urinating on a hispanic female teenager tied up in the closet. This was the same paper that had that article about the virtues of rape last year, which wasn’t the least bit funny.
If you’re going to be outrageously offensive, at least be funny. I haven’t seen the cartoon, but it sure doesn’t sound funny from the way the Courant described it:
…in which a figure shaped like a triangle talks on a phone with a figure shaped like a square. The triangle figure says he noticed that his urine smelled like honey after eating a certain cereal, and the square figure asks if the triangle figure’s urine tastes like honey, too.
“I dunno,” the triangle replies. “I’d have to ask that 14 year old Latino girl tied up in the closet.”
Hand-lettered across the bottom of the comic strip is: “The Recorder does not support the kidnapping of (and subsequent urinating on) children of any age or ethnicity.”
So, is this really funny but I’m becoming an old fogey who just doesn’t understand modern comedy, or is this just a stupid comic strip that’s sort of offensive in a confusing way? I don’t get the reference, if there is one. What does the girl tied up in the closet supposed to refer to?
There is a Latino Voting Summit next Saturday the 22nd in New Haven. Program & registration form.

Kaufman refused Wednesday to reveal any more details about the theft, including whether the laptop had been left on a seat in the employee’s parked car or whether a window had been broken to gain entry.
No doubt the details were on the police blotter in NY, though!

I notice that she did not ask either Dodd or Courtney to try for federal legislation to permit the state to enter into an agreement with the Navy. Dodd, Lieberman, and Courtney all signed a letter to Navy Undersecretary for Installations, Wayne Arney, asking what the current laws permitted and what the Navy might be interested in in the future. I understand that this response is in a draft form and should be released shortly. We will then know what is required or not required to get an arrangement with the Navy that is mutually beneficial to the Navy and the State of CT.
