A new Quinnipiac Poll finds what past presidential polls in CT have: Rudy and Hillary are still on top, and are neck and neck.
But here’s the really interesting bit:
40. Chris Dodd has never gotten above one percent in the national presidential primary polls. Do you think it is time for him to drop out of the presidential race?Yes…70%
No….21%
Ouch. 55% also believe Dodd (who just moved to Iowa–his daughter is enrolled in kindergarten in Des Moines) is spending too much time on the campaign trail, and not enough in the senate.

I think it’s all in how the questions are structured. The Q-poll question feels more like an attack on Dodd than anything else.
The questions are a bit leading.
Define ‘a bit’.
Geesh, talk about the flat earth society over here….
Okay, the two Dodd questions are REALLY leading. However, it’s true that there isn’t all that much excitement about Dodd’s bid here in Connecticut (he’s at something like 5% here).
Dodd must be depressed and/or mad. 26 years serving the state and his party and he can’t even finish in the top three among state Dems?

I can’t argue with you there. And it’s to bad really, especially since he is well liked as a Senator. But really I think the lack of enthusiasm is less about Chris Dodd as a candidate, and more about the assumption that primaries have already been decided.
Well, I’m planning on voting for Dodd, but I’m hearing different things from my friends who support other candidates.
The first is Dodd’s tendency to be a bit wordy and uninspiring in terms of his speech. Fair or not, Obama captures people’s attention when he’s in a room. Heck, he comes across great on TV, too. A lot of people I’ve talked to just have trouble seeing him as anything but boring and blah. Hillary has people remembering Bill Clinton’s presidency, as well, and that helps.
The second thing I’m hearing is that people are aware of the historic nature of the elections coming up. With Obama or Hillary and with the nation fed up with Bush and the Republicans, we stand a very good chance of electing the first woman or the first minority to the Presidency. Barring any reason to not vote for either candidate, people are gravitating toward those candidates over the boring white guy from CT.
Admittedly, it’s only been 2 or 3 people on the latter reason, but the former reason I’ve heard a LOT. And this is all anecdotal anyway. But, it seems less about feeling like the race has been decided to me, at least.

RE: Dodd…
Yes… it MUST be how the question is worded… Buh haw haw haw haw!
Tell us, how would you like to have seen the question worded? How do you put a nice paint job on 1%?
I don’t want him to drop out though. I want him to eat shame in his home state. Delicious shame… Mua ha ha ha ha!
I think that Bill Richardson is the best in the litter of candidates. He has legislative, executive, and foreign policy experience and has some successes in all of those areas. He is not afraid to talk to the ‘bad guys.’ I think that Dodd has great credentials as well, but not as good as Richardson. That is one of the reasons Dodd has not gotten much above the margin of error.
Frankly I counldn’t care less if he drops out, stays in, moves to Ireland, or grows his hair a bit longer, colors it red, learns how to play guitar, and joins a rock band.. I think I am far more concern over this:
“Ouch. 55% also believe Dodd (who just moved to Iowa–his daughter is enrolled in kindergarten in Des Moines) is spending too much time on the campaign trail, and not enough in the senate.
Are not these guys elected to do a job??? I have no idea what “moved to Iowa” means…… But I do know he was elected to do a job representing CT in the senate. I have much the same concern with all the other senators running all over the country as well…….
Could it be possible we don’t need 2 senators from each state??? Maybe a few less Congress people as well????
Hmmmmmm…. Maybe we are on to somnething??
As I mentioned here, I think it’s somewhat ironic that CT residents think Dodd is not spending enough time in the Senate, given that he’s received a huge amount of attention in the last month for actions taken in the Senate (his hold on the FISA bill and opposition to Mukasey). Running for President doesn’t seem to have hurt Dodd’s ability to do his day job at all, in fact quite the opposite.

I agree. Dodd’s been on fire in the Senate lately. He’s been utilizing his position as a candidate to force senators like Obama and Clinton to state their own positions for voters. Dodd is an effective Senator, more than he gets credit for. I for one think he would be an excellent President.

I always thought Bill Richardson would be a formidable Democrat candidate. He’s also one of the few governors in recent years — R or D — to cut taxes. However, Richardson did terribly on Meet the Press, and many political writers say that really did in his campaign, not that it was really going places. Richardson looks great on paper, but is not a very dynamic speaker.
Brian,
“Running for President doesn’t seem to have hurt Dodd’s ability to do his day job at all, in fact quite the opposite.”
Dodd has missed about 33% of the votes while running for president, about the same percentage as Obama…..Clinton surpisingly has missed about half as much as them. Both McCain and Biden have missed even more than Dodd. Obviously all canidates have missed well above the average for the rest of the senate.
I find it very hard to believe that any of these canidates can be doing their day job to the best of their ability while missing so many votes…….
Why are we bothering talking about Chris Dodd’s “candidacy?” He is not winning or even coming reasonably close to being in contention – in his own state or otherwise. It’s completely irrelevant whether anyone believes he would be a good President since it’s not going to happen in this lifetime. This “run” is a complete and utter joke and a waste of money for anyone who contributed to his candidacy and time for anyone working for him. Yet every week seemingly there is another Dodd post on this site. I’d say his candidacy is over, but it never really started. OK, sorry, rant over.

‘bout Dodd’s bout…
Dude!
Dodd is a dud-dude,
Leave Dodd alone! (…see “Leave Britney Alone” at youtube.com).

Dodd has always been an absentee senator where his work back home is concerned. When is the last time you saw Dodd in Connecticut for something other than a press conference? When was his last town hall meeting? When was the last time he attempted to engage with the people he allegedly represents at the level he’s now trying to engage with Iowans?
“Dodd is an effective Senator” for whom, not the people of Connecticut.
What has he done for us lately or ever?
Dodd didn’t have a chance in the presidential election from the start. What national press or notoriety has he had in the eyes of the general public? For politicos like us, we know of him. We’ve seen him on Meet the Press, we’ve heard his praise in the political community, etc. But why should the single mom in Houston or the middle class family in Sacramento even CARE who the (aptly put) “boring white guy from CT” is? Obama had the DNC speaking gig to catapult him, Richardson is Hispanic and well spoken and (sadly) that gets him press moreso than his merits. Hillary is who she is.
Dodd didn’t biuld the foundation for a successful campaign. Why?
Because he was too busy doing his job and not being notorious. Sad, isn’t it?
>>Dodd didn’t have a chance in the presidential election from the start
Neither has Connecticut as long as he’s been in office. The guy’s nothing but a blow hard.
>>busy doing his job
What day was that?
>>not being notorious.
Where have you been? The guy has a horrible reputation.
Even other raving liberals occasionally make sense, (it’s rare but it does occur once in a while) and beyond a doubt work for their states; Chuck Schumer for example. I’d be willing to buy him a coffee sometime.
Hey – Trueblue -are you out there someplace?
Any idea where the pictures of me with Ned Lamont are?
No one’s emailed me a thing. Got any?

Thanks if you’ve got one or two – my sister in law’s one of you; I want to frame it and put it on the mantle beside some others that drive her nuts.
That should confuse her.
>>Leave Dodd alone! (…see “Leave Britney Alone” at youtube.com).
We should do one just like that for Dodd.
