Meeting Lee Whitnum

by CGG · December 4th, 2007, 10:00 am · 35 Comments

Does the thought of foreigners taking jobs away from Harvard educated white women keep you up at night? Does the mere existence of conventionally attractive people piss you off? If you answered yes to either one of these questions have I got a candidate for you!

Lee Whitnum is running for congress in the 4th district as a Democrat. Last night I had the opportunity to see her in action when she came to speak at the Fairfield DTC meeting. I’ve heard a lot about Ms. Whitnum’s candidacy over the past couple of months and she lived up to her reputation.

Ms. Whitnum’s campaign platform comes down to two issues. The first is immigration. Apparently the combination of illegal immigrants and legal immigrants with H-1B visas have made it impossible for Lee Whitnum to make a living. Despite having a degree from Harvard Whitnum is forced to work as a substitute teacher making $85 a day. She claims that illegal immigrants make more money than her and don’t pay taxes. No one wants to hire a well educated white woman anymore! I should also point out that Whitnum used the phrases “white woman” and “white people” constantly when speaking about immigration.

Her other issue is that Jim Himes is handsome. Apparently this should disqualify him from running for congress. Whitnum is tired of good looking people like Jim Himes getting ahead in life based solely on their attractiveness. Being handsome won’t help Himes beat Chris Shays (which to be fair is true). Whitnum also claimed that she fundamentally understood Shays in a way that Jim Himes did not which would help her beat him in a general election.

Whitnum finished her speech with a blunt ask for convention delegates and money. She didn’t take questions from the audience, but did stay until the end of the meeting to chat. Another blogger videotaped her speech but she requested that he not post it. We spoke briefly about the importance of reaching out to bloggers as part of any outreach strategy. Since I was promoting a fundraiser for Jim at the same meeting she knew that I’m a Himes supporter but I did offer her some suggestions about how to make her case on the tubes.

We won’t see a primary in the 4th. Lee Whitnum’s chances of getting more than a handful of delegates are slim to none. But I don’t think she’ll drop out anytime soon. Expect to see Whitnum making the rounds in the 4th district over the next couple of months. If nothing else it will keep things interesting.

I don’t have a job for after graduation, either. I never thought of running for Congress! Lee Whitnum is an inspiration.

  • 2 tessa // Dec 4, 2007 at 10:49 am ·

    I am hiring.

But not people who went to Harvard.

Unless they went to the School of Architecture, which is a very cool place.

As to the other issue: all job candidates are forced to interview while wearing a bag over their head.

    Barooooo!

The subject of educational background makes me think about how interesting it is that CT — one of the most educated states in the union — has in the last 20 years had two governors (O’Neill, Rell) without college degrees!

I don’t think that the videoblogger is under any obligation to honor Ms. Whitnum’s request about his tape. As far as I know, DTC meetings are open to the public and press — at least the ones I’ve attended were.

  • 9 spazeboy // Dec 4, 2007 at 12:19 pm ·

As an afterthought, it occurs to me that it would be much more cost-effective for Ms. Whitnum to alienate 4th CD progressives by having her video posted on My Left Nutmeg than by attempting to do so in person.

Seriously. Claiming that you’re a victim of unfair discrimination because you are a “white woman” is ridiculous.

Chirs was suggesting on another thread that your not posting on the front page was some attempt no to embarass people, HH. I am guessing you don’t wnat to embarass Rell and ecah and every single Republican in the GA – all of them – who voted for the billion dollar program that came out of the blue because none of them much care about how state tapxayer money is spent but they do seem to care that when a proposal goes thru and they aren’t in line for some nooky!

  • 12 Headless Horseman // Dec 4, 2007 at 12:38 pm ·

toucan- I didn’t see where Chris had suggested such a thing. But since you bring it up…

Voting for that bonding without the checks that Sen. Hartley wanted would have been foolish. Only Democrats were in line to do that. The new bonding bill that Rell approved at least had those and didn’t become another UConn 2000.

I think it would probably be difficult for Governor Rell to get any embarrassment out of this issue. I think Senator Gaffey owns all the embarrassment available, what with his “big boy” nickname and the “god” and “goddess” stuff getting printed.

I suppose I could have front-paged about it here but instead I did it on my own site, because I wasn’t in the mood to be on my best behavior with the subject.

Well, I wasn’t trying to say that they aren’t, but I can see how it would be interpreted that way. Sloppy commenting on my part.

What I mean is that I find it hard to believe that Ms. Whitnum is in fact being discriminated against simply because she’s a “white woman,” and that there is more than likely a better explanation for her employment status (which she seems to find unsatisfactory).

What that explanation is, I can’t know.

Ha ha! Oh come on. There’s 44 of them in the House and 12 of them in the Senate, and yet somehow they managed to halt the supermajority from steamrollering, among other barrels of largess, a ten-year billion-dollar hand-out to CSUS without any checks on it.

If you want to see less government waste you’ll need to elect more Republicans. In the meantime, prepare to be routinely disappointed about what your state government does.

Lee Whitnum Roystone (her full name) is John Kerry’s ex girlfriend. She self-published a book called “Hedge Fund Mistress” that supposedly documented their relationship. (How long: DailyKos says 4 months, some other site says 20 months).

Kerry dated her until he met Teresa. Then it was curtains for this girl. Geez, that’s gotta suck. Going from dating a wealthy senator to working for $85 a day as a substitute teacher and self-publishing your novels. And now that she’s 47 and has never married, that train has left the station as well. So now she’s running for congress on some confused, quasi-nativist platform.

    Lee Roystone site: http://hedgefundmistress.com/

Apparently this site used to have nudity, but I didn’t see any… http://www.newshounds.us/2004/08/19/comedy_of_errors.php

“All I can tell you is that John is 100 percent male. John would whisper French phrases in my ear. I would say, ‘Speak to me in French!’ and so he’d do it. I don’t know what he was saying. I don’t speak French,” she said.

For once, I am in complete agreement with HH! The only candidate who could have that effect is Lee Whitnum, aka Lee Roystone, aka Marianne Cook, aka Alpha Blue Publishing, aka Lisa Whitnum.

Wealthy senator? He married wealth, twice as I recall. As long as we are pillorying this poor woman may I pile on with this observation: Whitnum=wits numb.

CCG – You missed my message – obviously on purpose. At least I have one. You are also unfair, you twist the facts, you lie, and you are mean-spirited.

The point was never about “well educated white women” I never used those words. And, it was never about my substitute teaching career (which is a worthwhile career). The point was about American middleclass technical jobs going to H1B status visa holders mainly from China and India. We have plenty of qualified people here. The recruiters and immigration lawyers use the law as a way to line their pockets at the expense of middleclass workers. My second point, was that illegals need to register as taxpayers by a certain date. Like the rest of us they need to pay for infrastructure, schools, roads, etc. They get paid in cash and most of them make more money than many Americans who are paying taxes such as waitresses, retail workers, and yes, substitute teachers. That was the point.

The only reference to White, was in talking about the demographics, white single women make up the largest population group in Fairfield County. I represent the majority. It had nothing to do with immigration. You purposefully tried to make me seem prejudiced which I am not. That is so wrong. I never once said, “white people.” I have the tape of my speech.
    CCG – You’re a liar.

CCG, you need to change the name of your website from CT Politics to the Jim Himes fan club. I finally learned why you and the other bloggers are so enamored with Jim Himes. “Jim invited us all over to his house.” Apparently a big thrill for you. A self-serving politician invites you over and feeds you and you are a friend for life and I’m automatically the enemy. What a bunch of pushovers you bloggers are. How disappointing. Haven’t you ever heard of the fourth estate – checks and balances. How journalistically unprofessional. And then you jumped up and down like a big overweight, over-anxious cheerleader. “I’m having another fund raiser for Jim Himes…and Jim will speak with us between rounds.” Oh goodie. PS – He is not your friend.

Attractive people? Again, you missed the point. Let me reiterate. People like you give Jim Himes way too much credit because he looks the part. You can’t seem to see his short-comings through your undying, adoration. Meanwhile, his campaign has been out for more than eight months and he STILL hasn’t taken a stand on ANYTHING other than the war. So far he’s just another politician with no message.

Also, I never said, I’m ” tired of good looking people like Jim Himes getting ahead in life based solely on their attractiveness.” I never said that. I also never said, “No one wants to hire a well educated white woman anymore.” CCG you are irresponsible, incompetent and dangerous.

I’d agree maybe incompetent. He doesn’t have enough juice to be dangerous; maybe annoying sometimes.

    Lee Whitnum,
A self-serving politician invites you over and feeds you and you are a friend for life and I’m automatically the enemy.
Don’t give yourself too much credit. You’re more like a rodeo clown in this race than you are any kind of enemy or threat.
What a bunch of pushovers you bloggers are. How disappointing. Haven’t you ever heard of the fourth estate – checks and balances. How journalistically unprofessional.
Bloggers are up front with their biases. Everyone who reads what CGG writes knows where she’s coming from (politically) and can take it with the appropriate grain of salt. My blog is the same way. If you want to pay me, I’ll hold myself to a different standard.

You are cordially invited to the Jim Himes for Congress Blog Raiser. Click here to contribute and RSVP. Please let me know if you RSVP, so you can be on my team. I’d love to get your signature on my copy of Hedge Fund Mistress.

    Oh, and stay classy.

    Lee,
You’re much more effective at undermining yourself than CGG could ever be.

  • 29 cranemeister // Dec 5, 2007 at 8:05 am ·

From what I’ve seen over the last year or so, I definitely give 100% credibility to Lee and 0% credibility to CGG with regard to the discrepancies between the two versions (CGG’s and Lee’s) of what Lee said at the meeting.

Lee, keep in mind that, as long as you are putting yourself in the public’s eye, there will be bloggers like CGG who will go very far out of their way to distort who you are and to promote their personal favorite candidates such as Jim Hyms, Chris Dod, and Ned LaMent.

  • 30 cranemeister // Dec 5, 2007 at 8:07 am ·

Also, Lee, it is commendable that you use your real name as you post your comments here. Your opponent likely takes a different approach.

Ms Whitnum: Many illegal undocumented immigrants use fake SS#’s and do pay taxes, FICA etc and never file a tax return or collect any benefit. The CBO can probablybly give you the annual # – it’s quite large. Not all get paid in cash.

  • 32 matt w // Dec 5, 2007 at 7:56 pm ·

I finally learned why you and the other bloggers are so enamored with Jim Himes. “Jim invited us all over to his house.”

Lee, let me recount our introduction for you:

Matt: “Hi, my name is Matt. I write for My Left Nutmeg.”

Lee: “I hate bloggers. How did you know I was going to be here?”

Matt: “I am a member of this committee.”

I am willing to be more nice to you than most who are exposed to this kind of thing. But as you said in your presentation, one of the reasons why Chris Shays gets elected is because he goes up to people and is pleasant towards them. It is a basic rule of politics — easy to forget with all the other, more abstract “rules” that candidates and political operatives hear — that people like it when candidates are nice to them.

Jim, from what I can ascertain, spends most of his day calling people up or visiting them where they live, work, or socialize and is nice to them, asking what they think about things, et cetera. That activity alone has earned him a reasonable amount of support from bloggers, town committee chairs, district leaders/ward chairs, regular delegates and others, and I have to be frank that I don’t think you’re doing particularly well in catching up with your current approach.

Since you’re looking for 15% at a convention, I should warn you that you don’t know who the delegates are (nobody does at this stage), and even once they’re chosen, it’s exceedingly difficult to find a list of them. And, while you don’t have to take advice from me, with those facts in mind I would take care to ensure that as many people as possible keep a positive opinion of you as possible — or, in the case of those who already support your opponent, a neutral opinion. Because if ward and district leaders start to view you in an unfavorable light, they will make sure to pack the convention against you, and getting any number of votes will become extremely difficult.

    Delicious exchange!

I say if we can put Gopher from the Love Boat and Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard in Congress, there’s plenty of room fro Lee Whitnum.

By the way… is that scrapbook really yours? It’s a little frightening.
