Convention Time

Local conventions are meeting this week and next to select nominees for General Assembly seats. Some stories of interest:

There’s a possible primary for Republicans brewing in Windsor and Windsor Locks. Michael Royston of Windsor Locks won the 60th district convention but two Windsor delegates supported Mohan Sachdev, a Windsor veterinarian, instead. Sachdev is expected to primary. Democrats in that district also face a primary, as Adam Gutcheon is expected to get enough support amongst the Windsor delegates to force a primary against incumbent State Rep. Peggy Sayers. Yes, there’s a definite Windsor vs. Windsor Locks thing going on here! It should be a fun one to watch.

Toni Boucher nominated down in Westport for the 26th District senate seat. Running against her will be John Hartwell.

There is currently no Democrat running against Rep. John Hetherington in the 125th House district. Sen. Edith Prague also doesn’t have an opponent.

Melanie O’Brien (R), Bethel’s town attorney, was chosen by Republicans to run against Rep. Jason Bartlett (D) in the 2nd House district.

We already knew these, but Michael McLachlan was nominated by the GOP to take Sen. David Cappiello’s seat, and L. Scott Frantz was nominated by Republicans to take Sen. William Nickerson’s seat. Cappiello is running for Congress and Nickerson is retiring. Neither McLachlan nor Frantz have a Democratic opponent as yet.

A Republican primary is brewing in the 9th House district (East Hartford, Glastonbury, Manchester) as both Michael Crockett and Dennis Brenner gathered enough votes at the convention to challenge nominee Cliff Thompson of Manchester. Democrats may also have a primary, as two candidates, Joseph S. Hachey and Jason Rojas, are seeking the nomination. Their convention is on Tuesday.
