Rep. Bill Dyson (D-New Haven) announced his retirement at the New Haven Democratic convention yesterday. Dyson has been in the General Assembly since 1977, but now wants to devote more time to another passion of his:
Dyson announced that instead of seeking reelection, he would turn to working on the issue closest to his heart. He introduced the crowd to his son Erick, who spent nine years in federal prison on narcotics conspiracy charges.“He spent time in prison, nine years, and there came my devotion to doing something for those people coming in and coming out,” said Dyson, taking the mic on the stage of the cafeteria.
“[As] I move from this page of things, I intend to devote my energies to working on these issues. As long as I am able to do so, I shall not forget.” (Bailey)
Dyson wants to start an advocacy group to work on criminal justice issues. New Haven alderman Charles Blango was endorsed by the Democratic Party for Dyson’s seat, but he’ll have to survive a primary in August in order to get it. Willie Greene and Gary Holder-Winfield will be attempting to qualify for that primary.
