McCain/Lieberman? Closer Than We Think

UPDATE [by Gabe]: Apparently, this was the brainchild of Karl Rove (less generous interpretation: Novak got rolled by Rove, again, in Rove’s attempt to kill the Lieberman for VP idea):

Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation.

Lieberman dismissed the request, these sources agreed.

Lieberman “laughed at the suggestion and certainly did not call [McCain] on it,” said one source familiar with the details.

“Rove called Lieberman,” recounted a second source. “Lieberman told him he would not make that call.”

It is also chafing some Lieberman allies and others wary of the selection of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.

Rove trying to sink Joe’s chances in favor of Romney?

How close are we to seeing Joe Lieberman be picked as John McCain’s running mate?

Close enough, apparently, that Bob Novak came out of retirement to write a column denouncing the idea. According to Novak, Lieberman and some nebulous Republican “friends” told McCain that a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be a “disaster.”

But wait, it gets better. Lieberman’s people actually pushed back, saying that Novak was making stuff up, and that Joe is still in the running.

McCain wouldn’t dare… would he? Is he that hell-bent on having his convention turn out 10x worse than the Democrats’?
