Lembo for Lt. Governor

by Heath · November 24th, 2009, 3:49 pm · 6 Comments

Per CT News Junkie, State Health Care Advocate Kevin Lembo is running for … Lt. Governor?

“Sometimes the governor leaves office and no one has really vetted the lieutenant governor, who is suddenly charge of $18 billion budget,” Lembo said. “Twice in recent history, Connecticut’s lieutenant governor has been asked to assume the state’s top job, and the people of this state have a right to make an informed choice about who is second in command.”

Mr. Lembo is 46 years old and lives in Guilford.

As a sidenote, if you’ve been having trouble getting to the blog today, fear not.  Our host has been having issues today, which are allegedly resolved.

So his campaign platform is maybe the governor will die or get involved in a massive scandal and have to quit?

Not exactly a feel good campaign platform.

Can’t wait to see those commercials…

[Camera starts with a shot of an "Election Day: Vote Here" sign, then pans to two elderly people waiting in line to vote]

Man (turns to lady behind him in line): “Well, Harriett, which of these idiots are we going to vote for this year?”

Woman: “I didn’t even know we had to VOTE for Lieutenant Governor.”

Man: “What do they even do, anyway?”

Woman: “Oh, well in the event that the first crook we elect ends up in jail, then they take over.”

Man (looks surprised): “That reminds me! Kevin Lembo is running for that seat. He’s running on a platform of being ready in case the Governor goes to jail.”

Woman: “He sounds good enough. Alright Wilson, let’s get this over with. Get in there and vote.”

Man (turns and looks at camera): “On Election Day, vote Kevin Lembo. If the other idiot we elect goes to jail, he’ll be ready.”

Kevin Lembo: “Hi, I’m Kevin Lembo and I approve this ad because it’s time we had a good Plan B.”

Announcer: “Paid for by Kevin Lembo for Lt. Governor, Approved by Kevin Lembo. Bob Smith, Treasurer.”

… actually i’ve got three or four different spots you could do all out of the same theme that would be really funny.

Everyone who runs for Governor, wants ( and earns) the right to select the Lt Governor for the combined ticket. It isn’t a job you run for, as the Lt Governor must subordinate himself/herself to the Governor when in office. It would be extremely difficult to subordinate yourself in office,if you have had wildly different issues, opinions and policy positions on the campaign trail for Lt Governor.Nor would there likely be a feeling of a partnership if the Lt Governor was doing his own thing.

Can someone get on the Primary Ballot without being picked by one of the candidates for Governor? Can you run independently w/o a sponsor so to speak? I realize there’s a separate line and a Lt Gov can win w/o the running mate (a la mary glassman), but how does an independent access the ballot?

It’s kind of like someone running for vice president. “Just a heartbeat away!” would be a catchy slogan.

And while you can run on a separate ballot line for Lt. Gov. during a primary, don’t they have to run on a single line with the gubernatorial candidate in the general election?
