Danbury Leading

By Wild Man | November 11, 2007

Danbury is highlighted in a study by CERC for having high labor growth in Connecticut. A combination of factors contribute to this of course including, location, overall economic climate, taxation and local policy decisions. The latter is of course where we can control our own destiny. Danbury has been aggressive in attracting business, corporate and small alike, and the corresponding population growth to support those businesses. Tax incentives for corporations wanting to relocate or expand here are pointless if Danbury can’t support that growth with educated and qualified workers.

The much maligned BRT Crosby Street project is allowing WCSU to expand and grow. Study after study show that students tend to locate and raise families where they attend college. Strong downtown areas are vital to a city’s growth. Danbury’s downtown can be considered a weak urban center however with more projects similar to the BRT Brookview Commons and the planned Kennedy place project and the policies that brought them here will ensure that Danbury continues to lead the way, driving investment, job creation, higher incomes, and improved standard of living. Increased economic activity will result in greater tax revenues to support investments in education, infrastructure and public services.

Its a Wrap

By Wild Man | November 9, 2007

Despite the last minute negativity and desperate eleventh hour accusations from his opponent, Mayor Boughton was victorious Tuesday night along with most of his team. For those paying attention the results were a foregone conclusion as Abrantes simply had no issues to run on and her misguided attacks fell on deaf ears. At the risk of repeating myself, things are good in Danbury and those that aren’t up to par are headed in the right direction.

That said, you have to give the woman credit for stepping up and wanting to serve her community. Unfortunately for her, she was duped by the Democratic Town Committee into thinking she actually had a chance of winning. She couldn’t even garner the support of the Portuguese Cultural Center where she is a member and who, by the way, hosted Boughton’s slam dunk party.

Though the mayoral outcome wasn’t a surprise to most, there was a big upset in the Common Council where Joe Cavo and Mike Calandrino took the Third Ward, ousting Lynn Taborsak. No shortage of celebrants on this one as Lynn was a constant irritant— much like my daughters persistent ear infections. Unfortunately Warren Levy squeaked in over Pauline Basso bringing a new bet noir into the neighborhood. Forget earache, think irritable bowel.

Ben Chianese and Paul Rotello also won again and are sure to be as annoying as ever, questioning everything in triplicate yet offering no answers themselves.

The official results can be found here from the city of Danbury website.

Bye Bye Lynn

By Wild Man | November 7, 2007

Lynn Taborsak lost  to Common Council President Joe Cavo in the Third Ward. This is a HUGE victory. The word on the street is that the Democrats are rejoicing more than the Republicans. Bye Bye Lynn, thanks for an annoying two years.

it is decidedly so

By Wild Man | November 4, 2007

8_ball_face.JPGRecent allegations of illegal donations to the Boughton 2003 Mayoral campaign along with supposed racist emails from the legislative branch have neither dampened the chances nor the likelihood of a strong showing on Tuesday for Boughton and Republican Common Council members.
Local Democratic panjandrums, in a last ditch effort to scrap together some votes, have resorted to attack tactics including holding a press conference in front of the Brookview Commons apartment building where they espoused what they and only they perceive to be tax giveaways. Apparently they would prefer vacant contaminated lots in our city center to vibrant, fully rented modern buildings. They also continue to downplay and evade the immigration issue which is on everyone’s mind, especially our downtown residents and those that want to see their neighborhoods revitalized.

In line with her eleventh hour TV and radio attack ads and last minute website debut, Abrantes is probably still out trying hopelessly to turn the tide knocking on doors and interrupting peoples peaceful Sunday mornings, while Boughton knows people have made up their mind and is likely in church.
The democrats have traditionally had a better GOTV mechanism especially in this heavily democratic city. However, the republicans have been able to capitalize on the internal personality conflicts and the schism in the Democratic Party and have achieved increased vote counts for each of Boughton’s last 3 victories.
On the whole, this year’s lackluster mayoral candidate shows no foresight into our future city needs, only criticism and a sciolism of Danbury. Her alienation of most of the Portuguese community in the city along with her near absence of fundraising shows that Danbury is simply not behind her. The democratic executive aspirants’ deficiency of reasons to criticize the incumbent and the general good feeling of Danbury’s direction will lead to a big Boughton win with a possible gain of two to three seats on the council and a repossession of the town clerks office.

 No Magic 8-Ball needed here.

Endorsement

By Wild Man | November 1, 2007

The No-Newstimes endorsed Mayor Boughton for a fourth term today. This is a monumental endorsement from our only (unfortunately.) hometown daily. Despite the unpersuasive attempts of Helena Abrantes and her fellow democrats to characterize the Mayor as all things evil the editorialists decided that an Abrantes win would spell disaster for the city.

It wasn’t, as in years past, a lesser of two evils endorsement. They even called the Mayor a “skilled politician and communicator” and the one responsible for “moving long needed projects ahead” and added that he was the best person for the job “given his record and plan for the future.”

This endorsement and his subsequent victory will send a message to the dysfunctional and split Danbury democrats. The message will be that they can’t get anything right and their incremental (and sometimes large) moves to the left on issues such as trying to stall the sex offender ordinance to seemingly support illegal immigration can and will spell disaster for them in subsequent elections.

Danburians also want to see revitalization downtown and not the messes from previous administrations. They want to see new and innovative approaches to revitalize downtown, including tax abatements if they bring people.

Danburians want to see something happen with the former Amphenol site and with the Palace Theater. New and creative ideas to draw people downtown (NOT including illegal immigrants) are needed and this Mayor has succeeded with that.

The Danbury Democrats are disgruntled, dysfunctional and destined for defeat.

They couldn’t even find enough candidates to run for a full slate and those that they did are re-runs and losers from past elections. Word on the street is that the fourth, fifth and sixth wards are leaning republican as well as the Town Clerk position. This election will be a resounding resolution on the democrat’s lack of vision for Danbury.

Money Down the Drain

By Wild Man | October 31, 2007

bu007762.jpg

Under the adopted 2008 budget, the tax levy increases by 27 percent.

No, this is not Danbury but neighboring Putnam County. It is hard to believe that the residents of Brewster, Carmel, Mahopac and the rest of the county will tolerate this. In addition to the tax increase, the position of Health Commissioner was almost eliminated.
This is a classic example of mismanagement and inept governing. The only solution those elected officials could think of was to raise taxes. No plan on cutting wasteful spending, no plan to bring in more revenue through business growth, no plan for anything innovative for that matter.
We bring this to the attention of Danbury’s Burning readers to highlight why living in Danbury is good and government has been if nothing else fiscally responsible. Retaining and encouraging new business in Danbury concurrent with ample housing and retail has made Danbury the shining star of Connecticut.
It is unlikely Danbury residents will vote for a change next Tuesday especially when our neighbors are having such difficulty. You can read the story from LOHUD here.

a day late and a dollar short

By Wild Man | October 30, 2007

Kudos to Helena Abrantes for getting her website up one whole week before the election. I visited the site and was ready to donate but alas, there was no place to donate. Unfortunately or fortunately for the residents of Danbury that has been par for the course. Helena has been slipping, tripping and falling down over every question, answer and day of this campaign. Her fund raising has been abysmal raising only one fifth of republican Mayor Boughton in a heavily democratic city.
Her campaign, her fundraising, her support, and most of all her visionn for Danbury is rudimentary , elementary, reactionary and simplistic. Danbury is much more complicated and intricate than she can grasp. Her funding and lack of a website speak volumes on her ability to run a city like Danbury.

unsupported claims

By Wild Man | October 27, 2007

Typical of the ultra liberal left and those on the losing end of what appears to be a landslide victory for Mayor Boughton, unsupported claims have surfaced. IRS, FBI, known illegal campaign contributions, racist emails, police beatings, civil rights violations and the list goes on. Losers are desperate and resort to evil tactics. The high road is invisible to them. Hopefully in less than two weeks the spider hole they emerged from will swallow them back up.

The people of Danbury are mostly unaffiliated, with democrats outnumbering republicans almost two to one. They are however not left leaning illegal immigration apologists or sanctuary city believers. They believe in working hard, family values, clean city streets and great schools. They believe in the rule of law. Mayor Boughton mirrors those values.

Danburians don’t believe our schools should be burdened with overcrowding which is clearly the result illegal immigration. They don’t believe we should have failing schools because some elementary classrooms have 50% non-English speaking students. The No-Newstimes fails to mention this but it’s the cold hard truth. Ask any elementary teacher or parent and they will concur.

Mayor Boughton’s stance on Illegal Immigration coupled with a stable tax rate, an aggressive stance on zoning violaters, generally good schools despite obstacles, low unemployment, new police and fire departments, continued smart growth (the list could go on) will make him victorious again. His victory will be in spite of the unsupported, vicious and outlandish claims of the new Danbury ultra liberal left.
